SMOKE ALARMS
Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives
Working smoke alarms can make a lifesaving difference in a home fire by providing early warning and giving occupants crucial time to escape safely.
Where to Install
It is recommended that smoke alarms, accompanied by carbon monoxide alarms, be placed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basements.

Test Monthly
Test smoke and CO alarms monthly using the test button. Make sure alarms are clean, securely mounted, and free from dust or obstructions. Vacuum around alarm vents about twice a year to help keep them working properly.

Replace at 10 Years
Smoke alarm sensors wear out over time. Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old, regardless of whether they are battery-powered or hardwired. CO alarms typically last 7–10 years, so check the manufacturer’s label for the replacement date.

Don't Ignore the Chirp
Unusual beeping or false alarms may mean your alarm needs attention. Check for dust, replace the battery if needed, and make sure steam, heat, or drafts aren't causing the problem. If the issue continues, replace the alarm.
