Smoke & Water Damage
What to know about smoke, soot, and water damage after a fire—and how to begin cleaning up safely.
Smoke & Water Damage: What Comes Next
Even after a fire is extinguished, smoke, soot, and water can continue to affect your home and belongings. Knowing what to avoid—and when to seek professional help—can prevent additional damage and help keep you safe.
Wait Until the Property Is Safe
Do not enter a fire-damaged structure until fire officials have determined it is safe. Fire, heat, and water can weaken floors, ceilings, stairs, and other structural components. Electrical and utility hazards may also remain.
Be Careful Around Standing Water
Water used to extinguish a fire may come into contact with damaged electrical systems, chemicals, debris, and other contaminants. Avoid standing water when electrical hazards may be present, and keep children and pets away from damaged areas.
Smoke and Soot Can Travel
Smoke and soot can spread well beyond the area where the fire occurred, including into walls, furniture, clothing, ventilation systems, and other parts of the home. Improper cleaning methods can sometimes spread soot or cause additional damage.
Document Damage Before Cleanup
Before moving, cleaning, or discarding damaged property, photograph or video affected rooms and belongings. Keep an inventory of damaged items and receipts for expenses associated with cleanup and recovery. Contact your insurance company before making major repairs or disposing of significant property.
Use Caution During Cleanup
Wear appropriate protective clothing when handling fire debris. Broken glass, sharp objects, exposed nails, damaged electrical components, wet materials, and unstable surfaces can all present hazards.
Know When to Call a Professional
Significant smoke, soot, or water damage may require professional cleaning and restoration. Restoration professionals can help evaluate materials, remove damaged contents, dry affected areas, and address contamination that may not be immediately visible.
Watch for Mold and Moisture
Wet building materials can create additional problems if they are not properly dried. If areas remain wet or damp, professional evaluation may be appropriate, particularly when water has entered walls, ceilings, insulation, or flooring.
