RECOVER

After a Fire
What to do after a home fire and the first steps toward recovery.
After the Fire: What Comes Next
A home fire can be overwhelming. Once the fire is out, knowing what to do next can help you begin the recovery process safely.
Wait Until It Is Safe to Enter
Do not enter a fire-damaged home until fire officials tell you it is safe. Fire can weaken floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, and other structural components. Utilities and hidden hot spots may also remain hazardous.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Notify your insurance company or agent as soon as possible. They can explain your coverage, help arrange temporary housing if needed, and provide guidance before cleanup or repairs begin.
Protect the Property
Once the property has been released and it is safe to do so, take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage. This may include covering openings or securing the property. Check with your insurance company before making significant repairs or discarding damaged belongings.
Document the Damage
Photograph or video damaged rooms, belongings, and property before cleanup begins. Keep an inventory of damaged or destroyed items and save receipts for expenses related to the fire and your recovery.
Use Caution During Cleanup
Fire debris, ash, broken glass, damaged electrical systems, contaminated water, and unstable materials can create additional hazards. Significant fire, smoke, or water damage may require qualified cleanup and restoration professionals.
Take Care of Yourself and Your Family
Recovering from a fire involves more than repairing a building. Stress and emotional reactions are common following an emergency, particularly for children. Give yourself and your family time to recover and reach out for assistance when needed.
