Fire Extinguisher Safety

Learn how to choose, use, and maintain a fire extinguisher—and when it’s safer to evacuate and call 911.

Portable fire extinguisher ready for emergency use

A portable fire extinguisher can help control a small fire, but only when it can be used safely. Your first priority should always be getting everyone out and calling 911.

Before using a fire extinguisher:

• Make sure everyone else is leaving the building.

• Call 911 or have someone else call.

• Keep a clear escape route behind you.

• Only attempt to extinguish a small, contained fire.

• If the fire grows, spreads, or produces heavy smoke, evacuate immediately.

Remember PASS:

PULL the pin.

AIM low at the base of the fire.

SQUEEZE the handle.

SWEEP from side to side.

Fire extinguishers should be easily accessible, properly maintained, and appropriate for the types of fires that could occur in your home.

When in doubt, get out. A fire extinguisher is a tool—not a substitute for a safe escape.
